Running a robot vacuum without WiFi or an app
Updated
If you want no WiFi, no app and no account, get the eufy 11S MAX. Its listing says it does not support WiFi or an app, and everything runs from the remote and the buttons on the robot. Some app robots will also clean from a button with no WiFi, but you lose most of what you paid for.
Two kinds of "no WiFi"
- Built with none. The eufy 11S MAX has nothing to pair. There is no account to make and nothing to fail when you change your router. It also has no map, so it cannot clean one room on request or stay out of another.
- Built for an app, used without it. Roborock's support site says its robots can run without WiFi and do full-home cleanups, spot cleanups and return to the dock from the buttons. It says WiFi is what unlocks scheduled cleaning, suction settings and more.
What the listings show for our picks
| Robot | Controls named on the listing | Without WiFi |
|---|---|---|
| eufy 11S MAX | Remote control, button | Everything works. It was built this way |
| roborock Q10 S5+ | App, button, voice | Button cleaning, per Roborock support. No schedules, rooms or no-go zones |
| roborock Qrevo S Pro | App, push button, voice | Same as above. We did not see how mop settings behave with no app |
| iRobot Roomba 105 Vac | App, button, voice | The listing says it uses a 2.4 GHz network for setup and for running. Do not buy it to use offline |
| Shark AI Ultra | App and voice only in the spec table | We could not confirm button use from the listing |
What you give up with no app
- Schedules from your phone. With the eufy you start it yourself or use the remote.
- Rooms and keep-out zones. These live in the app. Without it, a lidar robot still drives in rows, but it cleans everything it can reach.
- Multi-floor maps and mop settings. These are set in the app too.
- Updates and alerts. No "bin full" or "stuck" message on your phone.
So buying a lidar robot to run it offline means paying for a map you cannot use. If privacy or a weak router is the reason, the eufy is the cleaner answer. If pairing trouble is the reason, the fix is often the 2.4 GHz band, which we cover in mops, WiFi and thresholds.
The caveat on the eufy
You empty its 0.6 liter bin yourself, about every 4 runs in a 1,500 sq ft home with one pet and mixed floors by our estimate, and it is listed for hard floors to medium-pile carpet only. Amazon showed no owner summary on its listing the day we checked. Check your own numbers in the emptying calculator and compare the rest in the roundup.
