Robot vacuums on thick carpet
Updated
None of our five picks is listed for thick or high pile carpet, and we would not buy a robot as the only vacuum for it. For low and medium pile, the roborock Q10 S5+ is the pick we'd start with, because its listing says it detects carpet and raises suction on it. For shag and deep pile rugs, plan to block the robot off and keep your upright.
What the makers say
- The eufy 11S MAX is the only listing that draws a line. It is listed for hard floors up to medium-pile carpet.
- The other four listings say "carpet" with no pile height. A missing limit is not a promise.
- iRobot's support page on robots that miss areas lists thick carpet as a cause. It says longer rug threads and fibers can get pulled into the main brush and cause stalling, and it tells owners to roll up or block off thick carpeted areas.
The picks, for carpet homes
- roborock Q10 S5+. The listing says it finds carpet with an ultrasonic sensor, raises suction and lifts the mop up to 8 mm. The caveat: 8 mm is less than the pile of a thick rug, so take the mop pad off or set thick rugs as no-mop zones.
- Shark AI Ultra. It has no mop, so nothing wet ever touches your carpet, and the listing names a brushroll for carpets and hard floors. The caveat: owner reports of early failures.
- roborock Qrevo S Pro. The listing names carpet modes, boosted suction and a 10 mm mop lift. The caveat: we say in the roundup to skip it if your home is mostly carpet. You would be paying for a mop washing dock you barely use.
Carpet fills the bag faster
Our estimate adds 25 percent more debris for mixed floors and 50 percent for mostly carpet. For a 1,500 sq ft home with one pet and daily runs, a 2.7 liter dock bag lasts about this long:
- Mostly hard floors23 days
- Mixed floors18 days
- Mostly carpet15 days
A 0.6 liter robot bin in that carpet home fills in about 3 runs. Try your own numbers in the emptying calculator.
Before you buy for a carpet home
- Check rug edges and tassels. Fringe gets wound into the brush. Tuck it under or set a keep-out zone, which needs a robot with a map.
- Expect shorter runs. Listed battery life is a best case, and the eufy listing gives its 100 minutes for hardwood only. Recharge and resume helps in a big carpeted home.
- Dark carpet is its own problem. See robot vacuums on black carpet.
